The Firearms Registry is currently experiencing delays due largely to the implementation of the Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2025 (TOLA). These reforms have required substantial updates to Firearms Registry systems, processes, policy, and business practices to ensure compliance with the new legislative requirements. The Firearms Registry has also experienced a significant rise in some application volumes, which has seen processing times increase across a range of services.

We are continuing to prioritise system enhancements, process improvements, and resource allocation to restore normal service levels as quickly as possible.

PTA system enhancements are scheduled to be finalised for production in September. This is expected to complete PTA’s program of updates, which will greatly assist in processing times moving forward.

Submissions of  your licence or permit renewal prior to expiry ensures continuing authority and Applicants are encouraged to monitor the status of applications via Gun Safe or the Public Register.

While delays are understandably frustrating for licence holders, we appreciate your patience as we ensure the integrity of the system which supports the firearms regulatory framework.
