A high-quality education is a crucial first step for people entering the manpower side of NSW’s security industry.

SLED works closely with the security training industry to ensure students receive the education they need to prepare them for their security careers.

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) can apply to SLED to be recognised as Approved Organisations (AO), allowing them to provide NSW security licence course training, assessment and instruction to the required NSW standards.

To be eligible to become an AO, the RTO must be registered with the National VET Regulator, the Australian Skills Quality Authority, and be approved by them to deliver all necessary qualifications, including all units required to meet current NSW security licensing requirements.

SLED conducts a comprehensive assessment of all RTOs to ensure they have the necessary resources and capability to meet the regulatory requirements to be an AO, and that they’re compliant with security industry legislation.

SLED auditors from the Training Regulation team conduct regular audits of Security Licence Courses being conducted to ensure AOs and their Approved Trainers are complying with security industry legislation and regulatory requirements.

How do I become an Approved Trainer at an Approved Organisation?

Security trainers play a key role in the development and improvement of the NSW security industry.

To ensure all security graduates receive quality training that properly prepares them for their security career, SLED approves all security trainers.

Prospective trainers must hold a Class 2D security licence and are nominated as Approved Trainers (AT) by the Approved Organisation (AO) wishing to employ them.

SLED then carries out probity checks and ensures the nominated trainer has completed the required training and has the mandatory industry and Vocational Education and Training experience.

SLED conducts regular audits to ensure ATs are complying with the conditions of approval and providing a high-quality security education.

If an AT wants to move to a different AO, the new AO must nominate them, and the approval process is repeated.

How does SLED regulate security training?

SLED has a Training Regulation team (TRT) who implement an auditing program. All team members hold at a minimum the TAE40116 Certificate IV in training and assessment and come with a mix of industry experience across related industry sectors and as well as highly regarded vocational education experience.

Auditors conduct regular audits of Approved Organisations (AO) and their trainers to ensure the training, assessment and instruction they’re providing meets the high standards and regulatory requirements SLED has set.

SLED auditors have a range of powers they can use to assist them in their audits.

For more information about these powers, see the SLED Enforcement Officer Powers page.

During these audits, the auditors ensure the AO and the trainers are complying with the rules set out in the Security Industry Act 1997 and SLED’s NSW Security Licence Course Conditions of Approval.

If they find a trainer or an AO has breached the legislation or the conditions, the Auditors use a graduated enforcement model to determine what action should be taken.

Graduated enforcement model

For minor breaches where there is no history of non-compliance with the legislation, they can provide advice and education and issue warnings and cautions.

For more serious breaches, or where there has been repeated non-compliance, auditors can issue fines or court attendance notices, and can recommend an AO or a trainer lose their approval.
