Important:
On 1 July 2022, the Commercial Agents and Private Inquiry Agents Act 2004 (CAPI) will be repealed.
From that date:
- CAPI licences will cease to exist
- NSW Fair Trading will be responsible for the licensing of commercial agents
- SLED will remain responsible for the licensing of private inquiry agents, but they will be known as private investigators - a new subclass of security licence.
SLED is no longer accepting new CAPI applications. If you would like to apply for a licence to carry on private investigator activities, you should do so, online, after 1 July 2022.
If you have a CAPI licence with private inquiry agent activities that is due to expire before 1 July 2022, please email SLED at sled@police.nsw.gov.au with your name and contact number and your CAPI licence number.
If you would like to apply for a commercial agent licence, you should contact NSW Fair Trading to discuss your licensing requirements.
