Class 1 licence applicants, except those applying for a 1E (Monitoring Centre Operator) licence, must complete the NSW Security Licence Course (SLC) via an Approved Organisation.
SLED has a list of Approved Organisations and the courses they deliver, which you can view here.
To apply for a Class 1 licence (except 1E), you must complete:
- The SLED Pre-Enrolment Assessment - including a language, literacy and numeracy test
- First aid certificate - issued within the past three years by a Registered Training Organisation
- Class 1A or 1C applicants must complete HLTAID011 (Apply First Aid)
- Class 1B, 1D or 1F licences must complete HLTAID011 (Apply First Aid) AND HLTAID014 (Provide Advanced First Aid)
- You must keep your first aid certificate current and renew it every three years while you hold a NSW security licence
- SLED will only accept HLTAID003 and HLTAID006 qualifications that were completed before 30 June 2022
- The current approved mandatory units in CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations.

Class 1B, 1C, 1D and 1F subclasses:
To apply for or add 1B, 1C, 1D or 1F to an existing licence, you must complete additional units. Each subclass has specific units you need to complete before you are eligible to add on the subclass.
To be eligible for any of these subclasses you must:
- Complete HLTAID014 (Provide Advanced First Aid). SLED can only accept first aid qualifications completed within the previous three years
- Provide a statement of attainment showing you have successfully completed the required units via a SLED Approved Organisation for the subclass you want to add.
For a 1B (Bodyguard) subclass you must also successfully complete:
- CPPSEC3122 Plan provision of close protection services
- CPPSEC3123 Implement close protection services
For a 1C (Cash-in-Transit Guard) subclass you must also successfully complete:
- CPPSEC3118 Inspect and test cash-in-transit security equipment
- CPPSEC3119 Implement cash-in-transit security procedures
- CPPSEC3120 Load and unload cash-in-transit in secured and unsecured environment
For a 1D (Guard Dog Handler) subclass you must also successfully complete:
- CPPSEC3112 Manage training and wellbeing of dogs for security functions
- CPPSEC3113 Handle dogs for security patrols
For a 1F (Armed Guard) subclass you must also successfully complete:
- CPPSEC3101 Manage conflict and security risks through negotiation
- CPPSEC3102 Maintain operational safety and security of work environment
- CPPSEC3103 Determine and implement response to security risk situation
Once you have completed the 1F (Armed Guard) Course, you must complete the Security Firearms Training (listed in the NSW SLC course structure) and apply to the Firearms Registry for a Category H Provisional Pistol Licence.
