All persons who hold a firearms licence or permit must comply with the general legislative requirements of the Firearms Act 1996, the Weapons Prohibition Act 1998 and the associated Regulations.

To assist licence and permit holders in identifying and complying with these legislative requirements, the documents below outlining your obligations as a licence or permit holder, have been made available.

In addition to these general requirements, a licence or permit holder has specific conditions which must be met, depending on the category licence, genuine reason for obtaining the licence or the type of permit held.

In addition to these general legislative requirements, there are specific requirements for different categories of licence or genuine reason held. These specific requirements can be found in the Firearms Act 1996 and the Firearms Regulation 2017.

These legislative requirements are applicable to all firearms permit holders regardless of the type of permit held.

Authority and conditions specific to each permit type are printed and posted to each permit holder when the permit is issued. Each permit holder must comply with the general legislative requirements for firearms permit holders and the authority and conditions specific to their permit.

The authority and conditions are produced here for the following permits as they are issued as a 'permit card' by the RTA. A printed copy of the authority and conditions for all other firearms permits are sent to the permit holder.
