A critical incident investigation is underway after a man died following a crash in Sydney’s west overnight.

About 1.10am today (Sunday 2 January 2022), an officer attached to Blacktown Police Area Command attempted to speak to a motorcyclist with a pillion passenger, who were stopped on Alpha Street, Blacktown, and not wearing helmets.

The officer directed the pair to move to the side of the road and as he went to conduct a U-turn, the rider failed to follow police direction and rode from the scene.

A short time later, the motorcycle collided with a Lexus SUV at the intersection of Bungarribee Road and Balmoral Street.

Police were directed to the scene by PolAir and assistance was rendered – including CPR – until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Despite their efforts, the 23-year-old male rider died at the scene, while the 22-year-old male passenger was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The four occupants of the SUV were uninjured.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

A critical incident team from Mount Druitt Police Area Command will investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
