Man charged after pursuit - Coffs Harbour

A man has been charged following a police pursuit on the states north coast.

Just before 11.20pm last night (Friday 31 December 2021), officers attached to Coffs/Clarence Traffic and Highway Patrol were performing traffic duties on the Solitary Island Way, Woolgoolga, when they detected two motorcycles travelling at excessive speed.

Police attempted to stop the two motorcycles, including a Yamaha, before both riders accelerated away.

A pursuit was initiated with the motorcyclists reaching speeds up to 180kmph in a sign posted 110kmph zone.

Whilst travelling south on the Pacific Highway, the Yamaha left the roadway and entered a grass median strip and hit a small tree. The rider was thrown from the bike after losing control.

The 43-year-old man was arrested before being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus with minor injuries.

He was subsequently charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle, use uninsured motor vehicle, and class A motor vehicle exceed speed of 45 km/h.

He was refused bail to attend Port Macquarie Local Court today (Saturday 1 January 2022).

Inquiries are continuing into the identity of the second motorcyclist.
