Man charged following police pursuit - Lake Illawarra

A man will appear in court today, charged after an alleged pursuit in the state’s Illawarra Region yesterday
About 5.45pm (Tuesday 3 November 2021), officers attached to Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol attempted to stop a green Mazda 323 on King Street, Warilla, when the driver allegedly accelerated away at high speed.
A pursuit was initiated, and the car eventually hit a parked Holden Commodore station wagon after travelling down the incorrect side of Madigan Boulevard, Mount Warrigal.
The driver, a 28-year-old man, was arrested as he attempted to exit the vehicle. Three occupants also ran from the vehicle, with two located nearby.
The driver was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
Additional checks revealed the man’s licence is disqualified until 2035.
Upon discharge from hospital, the man was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit – not stop - drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive vehicle under influence of drugs, negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period,
It will be alleged the car was travelling at 100km/h in an 50km/h signposted area.
The Mount Warrigal man was refused bail and is due to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 3 November 2021).
Two passengers were released without charge. Inquiries continue to locate the third passenger.
