Officer assaulted during altercation; three charged - Pyrmont

Three men have been charged after a police officer was assaulted during an altercation at Pyrmont overnight.

Just before 10pm on Friday (22 October 2021), officers conducting duties at a casino at Pyrmont observed a man inside the premise in breach of the Public Health Order by not wearing an appropriate face mask.

When officers approached the 20-year-old man, he allegedly became verbally aggressive.

The man refused to leave the premises as directed and physically resisted attempts by police to remove him from the location.

The man was arrested following a brief struggle and allegedly spat toward a male constable.

During the interaction, a further two men – aged 19 and 22 – attempted to intervene and hindered police, before the younger man allegedly punched a male senior sergeant in the chest.

Additional officers from Sydney City Police Area Command, the Public Order and Riot Squad (PORS), Central Metropolitan Region Operations Support Group (OSG) and Traffic & Highway Patrol Command attended to assist.

All three men were arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

The 20-year-old Carramar man was charged with use offensive language in/near public place/school, fail to leave premises when required and resist officer in execution of duty.

The 19-year-old Carramar man was charged with resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm and resist officer in execution of duty.

The 22-year-old Rossmore man was charged with resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty and use offensive language in/near public place/school.

All three men were granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 1 December 2021.
