Charges laid over alleged abuse of baby girl in Sydney's west

A man will appear in court today charged with child abuse-related offences following an investigation into injuries sustained by a baby girl in Sydney’s west.

On Friday 27 August 2021, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation after an eight-month-old girl was treated at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for serious head and neck injuries.

Following extensive inquiries, a 24-year-old man was arrested by detectives at a house in Whalan about 10am yesterday (Friday 8 October 2021).

He was taken to Mt Druitt Police Station and charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent, and intentionally choke person without consent.

Police will allege in court that the infant sustained the injuries while in the man’s care.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 9 October 2021).

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
