Redfern RES seize 'ice' valued at $1.5 million, 18kg of cannabis and $220,000 cash; 13 charged

Redfern Region Enforcement Squad investigators have now charged 13 people and seized ‘ice’ valued at over $1.5 million, as well as 18kg of cannabis, 270g of cocaine and more than $220,000 cash, after executing 21 search warrants across Sydney.

In September last year, officers from Redfern Region Enforcement Squad (RES) established Strike Force Caprera to investigate the supply of methylamphetamine (ice) and cultivation of cannabis across Sydney.

Following extensive investigations, Redfern RES investigators executed 14 search warrants at Bankstown, Bass Hill, Cabramatta West, Canley Vale, Dundas, Guilford, Mount Pritchard, Riverwood, Sefton and Villawood from 10am last Wednesday (2 June 2021).

Police uncovered three hydroponic cannabis set-ups at homes at Guildford, Mount Pritchard and Dundas and seized 290 cannabis plants with an estimated potential street value of $1.015 million.

Four men – aged 26, 27, 33, 38 – and two women – aged 35 and 41 – were arrested and charged. All six remain before the courts.

About 11am the same day (Wednesday 2 June 2021), Redfern RES officers arrested a 64-year-old Villawood man during a vehicle stop at the intersection of the Hume Highway and Chester Hill Road at Bass Hill.

During a search of the vehicle, police seized $105,000 cash.

The man was taken to Bankstown Police Station and charged with nine offences, including three counts of supply prohibited drug (large commercial quantity), three counts of supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity), supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity), supply prohibited drug and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity.

Police will allege in court that the man was involved in the supply of 3.1kg of ‘ice’ with an estimated potential street value of $1.5 million between December last year and June this year.

He appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Thursday 3 June 2021, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday 4 August 2021.

A short time later, officers arrested a 48-year-old man at a home at Fairfield.

He was taken to Fairfield Police station and charged with take part supply prohibited drug (large commercial quantity), supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity) and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority.

He appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Thursday 3 June 2021, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at Fairfield Local Court on Thursday 17 June 2021.

Earlier this week, as part of Operation Ironside, Redfern RES investigators executed two search warrants at homes at Bankstown and Luddenham just before 8am on Monday (7 June 2021).

Redfern RES were assisted by officers from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), South West Metropolitan Operations Support Group (OSG), Police Transport Command, Forensic Evidence and Technical Services (FETS) and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, throughout the operation.

During the search at Bankstown, officers seized a mobile phone and issued a 49-year-old Bankstown man with a Court Attendance Notice (CAN) for contravene req in s 3LA order. He is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Thursday 29 July 2021.

During the search at Luddenham, officers seized $12,140 cash, 91g of cocaine, MDMA, cannabis and prescription medication.

A short time later, police attended a business at McLachlan Avenue, Rushcutters Bay, and spoke with a 49-year-old Luddenham man.

The man allegedly ran from police, throwing a bag under a nearby parked car. He was arrested following a brief foot pursuit at Neild Avenue, Darlinghurst.

The bag was recovered and found to contain more than 115g of cocaine.

The man was taken to Kings Cross Police Station and charged with six offences, including; resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, two counts of supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity) and three counts of possess prohibited drug.

He appeared at Central Local Court the same day, where he was granted strict conditional bail to reappear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday 12 July 2021.

Following further inquiries, Redfern RES investigators effected a second phase resolution of Strike Force Caprera, and executed five search warrants at Alexandria, Auburn, Campsie, Haymarket and Rockdale from 6am yesterday (Thursday 10 June 2021).

During the searches, police seized more than $76,000 cash, 63g of cocaine, 11g methylamphetamine (ice), an electronic stun device, mobile phones and other electronic items.

Officers also seized a stolen medical machine valued at more than $100,000.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at Auburn and charged with supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity), participate criminal group contribute criminal activity and driver fails/refuses to disclose his identity. He was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today (Friday 11 June 2021).

A 25-year-old woman was arrested at Alexandria and charged with supply prohibited drug, two counts of supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity), possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not motor vehicle), and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at Alexandria and charged with two counts of supply prohibited drug (indictable quantity), possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, knowingly deal with proceeds of crime and goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not motor vehicle).

The pair were refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Friday 11 June 2021).

So far, during the course of the investigation, police have seized ‘ice’ valued at over $1.5 million, 8kg of cannabis, 270g of cocaine and more than $220,000 cash.

Investigations by Redfern RES are continuing, and further arrests are expected.
