Man charged with arson following supermarket fire - Annandale

A man will face court today following a fire at a supermarket in Sydney’s inner-west earlier this week.

About 5.20am on Monday 9 August 2021, emergency services attended Booth Street at Annandale following reports of a fire in the loading dock of a supermarket.

As police arrived the fire had spread, endangering the occupants of a unit above the store.

Fire and Rescue NSW utilised an aerial ladder platform to safely rescue a 41-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman from the unit and they were treated at the scene.

The blaze was extinguished; however, caused significant damage.

A crime scene was established and was examined by specialist officers.

Officers from Leichhardt Police Area Command commenced and investigation and at 6pm yesterday (Tuesday 10 August 2021) arrested a 49-year-old man at a unit in White Street, Lilyfield.

The man was taken to Newtown Police Station and charged with destroy or damage property with intent to endanger life.

He was refused bail and is will appear in Newtown Local Court today
