A woman has been issued a Court Attendance Notice (CAN) after allegedly walking down a busy street in Sydney’s south west last night while carrying a burning flag.

As part of a community engagement and high-visibility policing operation during Ramadan festivities, officers from Campsie Police Area Command were conducting patrols at Lakemba when they were alerted to an unauthorised protest of about 200 people in the reserve on The Boulevarde about 8pm (Tuesday 11 May 2021).

Officers attended and liaised with the organiser to assist with the safe facilitation of the demonstration.

About 9.30pm, police observed a woman walking down the street through traffic and holding an Israeli flag that was on fire.

The flag was removed from her possession and as it was being extinguished, the woman ran from police.

She was detained a short time later and was spoken to by police before being issued a move-on direction.

A large crowd had gathered but remained compliant and dispersed a short time later.

Following inquiries, the 48-year-old woman was issued with a CAN earlier today (Wednesday 12 May 2021) for behave in offensive manner in/near public place and wilfully prevent free passage of person/vehicle.

She is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Thursday 8 July 2021.
