Man arrested after cross border NSW/Queensland Pursuit

A Queensland man has been arrested following a pursuit across the NSW/Queensland border.

Just after 10pm yesterday (Thursday 20 May 2021), the NSW Police Force was notified by Queensland Police that a stolen red Ford Laser had entered NSW.

A short time later, officers from New England Police District were patrolling at Boggabilla and spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it.

The driver failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.

Police pursued the vehicle north along the Newell Highway and it will be alleged the Ford was travelling at speeds well above to sigh posted limits. It will also be alleged that the occupants threw objects from the Ford at police.

The driver slowed in a rural area outside Bogabilla, where a person exited the Ford and fled from the scene.

Shortly after, the Ford crossed back into Queensland at Goondiwindi and Queensland Police deployed road spikes, which caused the tyres to deflate.

As the vehicle stopped on the Leichhardt Highway, the driver attempted to flee the scene on foot and officers gave chase on foot, arresting him nearby.

The 19-year-old Goondiwindi man was taken into custody by Queensland Police and taken to Toowoomba Watch House.

It was established that the man was a disqualified licence holder until 2023.

A Court Attendance Notice will be served on the man for police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, fail to comply with request or signal to stop vehicle and drive motor vehicle during disqualification.

He is due to appear at Boggabilla Local Court on Wednesday 4 August 2021.

Inquiries are continuing to establish the identity of the other occupant in the vehicle.
