Youth charged after pursuit of stolen car - Tamworth

Police have charged a teenage boy with multiple offences after separate incidents in the state’s west this morning.

About 1.30am (Monday 17 May 2021), police were called to a unit on Denison Street, West Tamworth, after an occupant woke and saw a male leaving through the front door.

The occupant – a 66-year-old man – went outside and saw three people males – one armed with a baseball bat – standing next to a white Suzuki Swift in the driveway.

The vehicle, which belonged to a 63-year-old woman, was then allegedly stolen by the three men.

The woman’s handbag, wallet and mobile phone were also allegedly taken from the unit.

Officers from Oxley Police District were alerted, and a description of the stolen car was circulated.

About 2.30am, the car was seen being driven on Bourne Street, West Tamworth, and a pursuit commenced when the driver failed to stop when directed.

A short time later, the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns.

About 30 minutes later, officers saw the car on Kirkham Crescent, Oxley Vale, before it accelerated away.

Police followed the car as it travelled towards the CBD, before hit a curb and stopped on Roderick Street, East Tamworth.

The alleged driver attempted to flee on foot but was arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station.

Following inquiries, a 15-year-old boy was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, aggravated break and enter dwelling etc in company steal, custody of knife in public place, and two counts of police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed.

He was refused bail and appeared at a children’s court today, where he was refused bail to appear at a children’s court on Friday 21 May 2021.
