Charges laid after puppy deliberately set alight - Lurnea

A man will face court today charged after a puppy was allegedly deliberately set alight at a unit in Sydney’s south-west today.

Just after 3.20am (Friday 14 May 2021), emergency services were called to a unit on Wonga Road, Lurnea, after reports of a unit fire.

Officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command attended, along with Fire and Rescue NSW.

The blaze, which had caused significant damage to the unit, was extinguished.

A six-month old puppy was found in a cage on the balcony, suffering severe burns after allegedly being set alight. The puppy was subsequently humanly euthanised by police.

Neighbours had evacuated prior to the attendance of emergency services and there have been no further reports of injuries

The occupant, a 39-year-old man was arrested and taken to Liverpool Police Station.

He was charged with commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, and damage property by fire.

The man was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court today (Friday 14 May 2021).
