Officer assaulted during arrest - Newtown

An officer has been assaulted during the arrest of a man in Sydney’s inner west today.
About 1.20pm (Wednesday 10 March 2021), officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command were on patrol in Camden Street, Newtown, when they noticed a man acting suspiciously.
As part of inquiries, it was established the man was wanted for a breach of bail.
While police were speaking to the man, he allegedly punched an officer in the head and attempted to flee. A wrestle ensued, where the man elbowed the officer in the head on numerous occasions, before breaking free.
Officers followed the man to Station Street, where he entered a house that was being renovated.
The Petersham man was located at the rear of the house where he armed himself with a hammer.
After negotiations with officers, the 47-year-old man was arrested. He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment of a head injury sustained in the scuffle. He remains in hospital under police guard.
A male constable was taken to RPA where he is receiving treatment for concussion and swelling to his face.
