DNA breakthrough leads to arrest 29 years after alleged sexual assault - Central Coast

Detectives have charged a man following an investigation into an alleged historic sexual assault after a DNA breakthrough led to an arrest yesterday.

On Tuesday 26 March 1996, a nine-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted on the Central Coast by a man not known to him.

Detectives were notified and commenced an investigation; however, despite extensive inquiries, were unable to make an arrest at the time of the incident.

As a result of further inquiries and advances in forensic DNA technology, detectives from the Tuggerah Lakes Criminal Investigation team arrested a 65-year-old man at Bathurst Police Station yesterday (Wednesday 26 November 2025).

The man was subsequently charged with sexual intercourse with person under the age of 10 years, and attempt sexual intercourse with person under 10 yrs.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 4 today (Thursday 27 November 2025).
