Cybercrime Squad charge woman over alleged online threats

Cybercrime Squad detectives have charged a woman following an investigation into online threats.

Detectives launched an investigation on Tuesday (12 August 2025) following reports a woman was allegedly sending offensive and threatening messages via social media.

Following extensive inquiries, about 6.55am today (Thursday 14 August 2025), detectives attached to the State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad – assisted by officers attached to Central Metropolitan Region ODIN team – executed a search warrant at a unit on Darling Street, Balmain.

Police located and seized a mobile phone and a laptop.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested at the address and was taken to Newtown Police Station.

She has been charged with use carriage service to threaten to kill, use carriage service to threaten serious harm and stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (personal).

She was granted conditional bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Friday 5 September 2025.

Cybercrime Squad Commander Detective Acting Superintendent Jason Smith said this case highlights how quickly and swiftly Cybercrime detectives act on reports of online threats.

“Cybercrime Squad detectives take all reports of online threats seriously,” Det A/Supt Smith said.

“Our priority is to ensure the safety of the community and this arrest sends a clear message: if you think you can hide behind a screen to offend or threaten others, think again.

“Behind every keyboard is a person who can be traced, tracked, and brought to justice.”
