Investigation underway after museum break-in - Lithgow

An investigation is underway after a museum in Lithgow was broken into overnight.

About 3.30am today (Sunday 25 August 2024) police were called to a museum on Methven Street, Lithgow, following reports of a break, enter and steal.

Officers attached to Chifley Police District attended the scene and were told three people broke into the museum and stole a number of non-operational firearms before leaving in a Toyota Landcruiser wagon.

The three people were dressed in black clothing and had their faces covered.

About 5.25am, police were called to Stockland Drive, Bathurst, where they found the SUV on fire.

The vehicle, which is believed to have been stolen from Nowra on Friday (23 August 2024), has been destroyed.

A crime scene was established at both locations and police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Police have been told the non-operational weapons are worth an estimated $200,000.
