Three charged after truck full of cannabis plants stopped at Belfield

Three men have been charged and a truck full of cannabis plants seized following a planned police operation in south-west Sydney yesterday.

Officers attached to the South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad – Wetherill Park initiated inquiries earlier this month into the alleged cultivation of cannabis in home in Enfield.

As part of a proactive strategy, a rental truck and a sedan were tracked from a home in Enfield before being stopped on Punchbowl Road, Belfield, about 2pm (Thursday 21 March 2024), with five men arrested.

Police will allege the truck was stacked with more than 120 cannabis plants in various stages of maturity.

The plants seized have an estimated potential street value of $180,000.

Five men were taken to Burwood Police Station where three have been charged.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with take part enhanced indoor cultivate cannabis commercial, possess cannabis (greater than indictable, less than commercial quantity), and found on/entering/leaving drug premises.

Two men, aged 31 and 42, have each been charged with take part enhanced indoor cultivate cannabis commercial, and found on/entering/leaving drug premises.

All three have been refused bail to appear in Burwood Local Court later today (Friday 22 March 2024).

Shortly before 5pm, officers attached to South West Metropolitan Operational Support Group executed a crime scene warrant on a two-storey home on Portland Street, Enfield, where they found a number of rooms had been converted to grow cannabis plants through enhanced indoor cultivation.

Almost 37 plants were seized along with dried cannabis. The plants seized have an estimated potential street value of $55,500.

The remaining two men have been released pending further inquiries.

Inquiries by the Region Enforcement Squad are continuing.
