A man has been charged following an investigation into two suspicious fires in the state’s west last week.

About 12.45am on 24 July 2025, emergency services were called to Fox Street, Walgett, following reports of two fires at nearby locations.

Officers attached to Central North Police District attended, alongside Fire and Rescue NSW crews who extinguished the fires.

The fires caused extensive damage to a fence adjacent to a vacant business and a bin and power pole at the rear of a supermarket, which disrupted the store’s electricity supply.

A crime scene was established, and police commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, about 1.30pm yesterday (Monday 28 July 2025), police arrested a 41-year-old man in Walgett.

He was taken to Walgett Police Station, where he was charged with two counts of damage property by fire/explosion.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 4 today (Tuesday 29 July 2025).
