Charges after death of puppy - Newcastle

A man will face court today charged after a puppy was allegedly beaten and subsequently died near Newcastle yesterday afternoon.

About 4.20pm yesterday (Sunday 20 July 2025), a man stopped his vehicle in a carpark on Maitland Road, Sandgate, and removed a puppy from his vehicle.

Police have been told that the man allegedly slammed the dog against the side of the vehicle several times, before throwing it to the ground.

Police were told that the assault allegedly continued before the pup was put back into the vehicle.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District were notified and commenced inquiries into the incident.

About 9.05pm, Port Stephens-Hunter Police attended a home in Lemon Tree Passage, where they arrested a 21-year-old man.

Police seized clothing, a car seat cover, and a mobile phone, which will undergo further examination.

Following inquiries by police, the puppy was located deceased on Porowei Way, Kooragang. Police have sought advice from a veterinarian after the body is examined.

The man was taken to Nelson Bay Police Station where he was charged with two offences; commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, and torture, beat etc and seriously injure animal.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Monday 21 July 2025).
