The search has been suspended for a missing man, after his boat capsized in the water, in the Illawarra on the weekend.

About 1pm on Sunday 1 June 2025, emergency services were called to the break wall in Seawall Road, Port Kembla, following reports of two people in the water.

On arrival, officers attached to Wollongong Police District found a capsized vessel, about 1km south of Port Kembla Road.

An 18-year-old man – who was on the vessel before it capsized – got himself to the shore and alerted members of the public who contacted emergency services.

Marine Area Command launched a search operation, with assistance from Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Helicopter.

However, the second person – a 78-year-old man was unable to be located.

The search recommended yesterday (Monday 2 June 2025) during daylight hours and again today ( Tuesday 3 June 2025), involving NSW Marine Area Command, NSW Police Divers, Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Helicopter.

Despite the efforts of searchers, the man has not yet been located, and the multi-agency search concluded about 3pm today.

Marine Area Command officers will continue patrolling the area in the coming days.
