Man charged following public place shooting - Woonona

A man will face court today charged after a public place shooting in the Wollongong area earlier this month.

About 11.30pm on Saturday 17 May 2025, police from Wollongong Police District were called to a home on Cotterill Avenue, Woonona, following reports a gunshot had been heard.

Officers attended and spoke with the occupants of the home – a 43-old man and a 44-year-old woman.

Damage was located on the front of the home, consistent with a projectile; however, there were no reports of injuries.

A short time later, emergency services were called to Dallas Avenue, Keiraville, following reports of a Kia hatchback on fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and worked to extinguish the blaze, however the car suffered significant damage and was seized to undergo forensic examination.

Police established crime scenes at both locations and began an investigation under Strike Force Baines.

Following inquiries, police located and arrested a 33-year-old man at a home on Armour Street, Bellambi.

It is alleged that during the arrest, the man resisted officers and a Taser and OC Spray were deployed, before being taken to hospital for further assessment.

Concurrently, a search warrant was executed at the Bellambi home with police seizing a number of items including a stolen Honda motorcycle, to be forensically examined.

Upon release, he was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with discharge firearm intend cause grievous bodily harm, be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner (two counts), acquire firearm - subject to prohibition order, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and hinder/resist law enforcement officer in execution of duty.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court today (Sunday 25 May 2025).
