Wanted man charged following pursuit - Albury

A man – wanted on outstanding warrants – has been charged following a pursuit with police in the state’s south yesterday.

Earlier this month, officers attached to Murray River Police District’s Domestic Violence Action Team, Criminal Investigation Unit, Proactive Crime Team and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, commenced inquiries to locate a 29-year-old man wanted on outstanding arrest warrants for alleged assault and fraud offences.

As part of inquiries, officers saw the man driving a Hyundai i30 in Albury’s CBD, about midday (Wednesday 24 August 2022.

Police followed the vehicle to Adams Street, Jindera, where it will be alleged the driver accelerated away and drove off at speed.

Shortly after, police located the vehicle on Hub Road, Table Top, where the man allegedly drove towards an unmarked police vehicle, with officers taking evasive action to avoid being struck.

The vehicle was followed by police to a dead-end street, where it will be further alleged the man drove towards the police vehicle at speed, causing officers to again take evasive action to avoid being struck.

The Hyundai drove off and officers attached to Murray River Police District’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command commenced a pursuit, which was terminated shortly after.

About 1pm, police again saw the man on Union Road, North Albury, where he fled on foot.

He was located hiding in the bushes of a nearby home, where he again allegedly attempted to run from officers.

The 29-year-old man was arrested with the help from a member of the public, and taken to Albury Police Station where he was charged with;

  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously,
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous,
  • Resist person aiding officer,
  • Enter inclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse,
  • Contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic),
  • Predatory driving, and,
  • Driver not disclose identity of driver/passenger as required.

The two outstanding warrants for assault, domestic violence and fraud offences were also executed.

The man was refused bail to appear at Albury Local Court today (Thursday 25 August 2022).

Two police vehicles were damaged after being in a minor crash; no one was seriously injured, while the Hyundai was later recovered after being found abandoned in a driveway on Bounds Street, Lavington.
