Man charged after Toongabbie stand-off

A man has been charged following a six-hour stand-off in Sydney’s west yesterday.

Police were called to Portico Parade, Toongabbie, about 11.30pm (Tuesday 24 January 2023), following reports of an assault.

Upon arrival, officers attached to Blacktown Police Area Command attempted to speak with a man; however, he allegedly left the scene.

Police were called to Octavia Street, Toongabbie, about 2am (Wednesday 25 January 2023), where they found the same the man on the roof of a house.

Officers attempted to speak with the man; however, it will be alleged he refused to come down and instead threw roof tiles at emergency personnel.

A perimeter was established and specialist police – including negotiators – were called to assist.

The 21-year-old man came down from the roof about 8.30am and was arrested in a neighbouring yard by officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad and the Dog Unit

He was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment for minor injuries before being released and taken to Blacktown Police Station, where he was charged with 13 offences,

• Assault police officer in execution of duty (three)

• Destroy or damage property (three counts)

• Destroy or damage property greater than $5000

• Destroy or damage property greater than $15000

• Armed with intent commit indictable offence

• Use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention

• Enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner

• Common assault, and

• Affray.

The man, from Blacktown, was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Thursday 26 January 2023).
