Police have charged a driver following an alleged pursuit through western Sydney yesterday.

About 10:10am Friday (19 April 2024), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attempted to stop an allegedly stolen Jeep Patriot on Punchbowl Road, Canterbury.

When it failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued through various suburbs in southwest Sydney, before crashing into a Mazda utility and coming to a stop on Elizabeth Drive, Bonnyrigg.

The driver and sole occupant - a 23-year-old man, abandoned the vehicle and attempted to run from the scene before being arrested by police.

During the arrest the man allegedly dropped a large knife which was seized for forensic examination.

The driver and passenger of the utility suffered minor injuries and were treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics at the scene.

The 23-year-old was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit drive dangerously, drive while licence cancelled, two counts of drive furiously in motor vehicle cause bodily harm, not give particulars to other driver, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and custody of knife in public place.

Police will allege in court that during the pursuit the man drove at police causing them to take evasive action to avoid being run over.

The man was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 20 April 2024), where he was further refused bail to appear before Burwood Local Court on Wednesday 8 May 2024.
