Officer suffers facial injuries after being hit with motorcycle helmet, two sought - Lake Illawarra PD

Police are searching for two people after an officer suffered facial injuries when hit in the face with a motorcycle helmet in the Lake Illawarra region yesterday.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were conducting patrols along Ena Avenue, Avondale, about 5.50pm (Thursday 22 September 2022), when they stopped an unregistered scooter being ridden by two males.

As they ran from police, one swung a motorcycle helmet at a male senior constable hitting him in the face and knocking him unconscious.

Nearby residents came to the officer’s aid, before he was able to signal for assistance.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before taken to Wollongong Hospital in a serious but stable condition where he’s being treated for facial fractures and a bleed on the brain.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District have commenced an investigation to locate two males they believe can assist with inquiries.

One has been described as Caucasian in appearance, in his late teens, between 170cm-180cm tall and with a thin build. He has a dark hair cut in a mullet and was wearing dark-coloured clothing.

The second male is described about 150cm tall with a thin build; he was also wearing dark-coloured clothing.

Witnesses saw the males run through backyards of Ena Avenue, before heading down Avondale Road.
