General Duties

General Duties officers are the first point of contact between the public and the NSW Police Force. They are your local police working in Local Area Commands (LACs).

They possess a sound knowledge of all aspects of policing for duties including:

  • Attendance, assistance and investigation of daily jobs such as domestic violence, assaults, break and enters, property theft, and malicious damage;
  • Patrolling the streets by vehicle, foot or bicycle;
  • Traffic control and coordination of traffic accidents
  •  Responding to calls to Police Assistance Line (PAL) and Triple Zero (000).

Specialist Units

The NSW Police Force offers ongoing education and training to ensure that police skills are up-to-date, and every officer is able to fulfil professional and personal development ambitions.

After 3 years general duties policing, police officers have the opportunity to specialise. They may continue in operational policing as General Duties officers, or apply to undertake further training in order to meet the professional requirements of Detectives or Specialist Operations.

You can transfer to one of the many and varied traffic policing duties after completing your mandatory three years of general police duty
