A man has been charged over a number of historic alleged sexual assaults of a young female relative when she was in his care.

In June, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad commenced an investigation following reports a girl, now aged 13, was sexually assaulted on a number of occasions between 2012 and 2015, when in the care of a relative in the state’s Riverina region.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a 44-year-old man at a home at Muswellbrook about 8.30am today (Wednesday 13 September 2017).

He was taken to Muswellbrook Police Station and charged with two counts of sexual intercourse with child under 10 – under authority, two counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with child under 14, and two counts of aggravated indecent assault.

The man was refused bail and appeared at Muswellbrook Local Court today, where he was formally refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday 20 September 2017.

Investigations are continuing.

The Child Abuse Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate crimes against children, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse and extreme cases of neglect.
