Man arrested over 2006 Martin Place cricket bat assault

A man will face court today in relation to a 2006 assault with a cricket bat that left a woman seriously injured.

About 9.45pm on Saturday 14 January 2006, the woman was a part of a group who had left a work function in the city and were in Martin Place playing cricket when they were approached by three men.

An altercation has broken out and as the woman was running from the scene she was hit by the cricket bat

The three men ran from the scene.

As a result of the assault, the woman was left with serious injuries and facial fractures which ultimately required plastic surgery.

Strike Force Dinora, comprising detectives from Sydney City Local Area Command, was formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.

As a result of inquiries by strike force detectives, a 30-year-old man was arrested yesterday (12 September 2017), on Goulburn Street at Surry Hills.

He was subsequently charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 30-year-old was refused bail and will appear in Central Local Court today (Wednesday 13 September 2017).
