Drink Drive II - Day 2 results

Sunday, 08 Nov 2009 09:58am

One fatality has been recorded on New South Wales roads during Operation Drink Drive II.

Officers attached to the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit are examining the circumstances surrounding a collision involving two vehicles on the Princes Highway at Gerringong about 8.45am yesterday (Friday 6 November 2009) which resulted in the death of a 73-year-old female.

On Day Two of the operation, a total of 41,453 breath tests were conducted and 55 drink-driving charges were laid, compared to 39,679 breath tests and 151 charges on Day Two last year.

So far, a total of 77,025 drivers have been breath-tested with 108 charges laid, compared to 74,853 tests last year and 259 charges.

Traffic Services Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, says while the number of people drink-driving is less than last year, it’s still not good enough.

“Too many people are still under the misapprehension that they can drink and drive,” Asst Commissioner Hartley said.

“Anyone thinking that is wrong – if you drink and drive you will be caught and face a range of penalties, including the possible immediate suspension and confiscation of your licence.”

“People need to take responsibility for their actions.”

“If you want to enjoy a few drinks with some friends, nominate a designated driver. But under no circumstances get behind the wheel while intoxicated.”

“It can potentially result in your death or serious injury, the serious injury or deaths of your mates, or an innocent third party.”

“Police are out in force on the roads and if you break the rules or drive irresponsibly, you will be caught,” Asst Commissioner Hartley said.
