Saturday, 07 Nov 2009 01:54pm
Police have clocked a learner driver travelling more than 100km/h above the legal speed limit in wet conditions in the Hunter Valley.
Officers from the Hunter Valley Highway Patrol observed a beige Toyota Corolla sedan travelling at high speed north along the New England Highway near Singleton about 9.30pm yesterday (Friday 6 November).
Police activated their unmarked patrol vehicle’s warning devices in a bid to pull over the Toyota; however, the male driver failed to stop and police initiated a pursuit.
The pursuit was terminated just south of Singleton after police allegedly clocked the vehicle’s speed at 184km/h – that’s 104km/h above the maximum 80km/h legal speed limit for learner drivers.
A short time later, police spotted the Toyota stopped in the grounds of the school.
They approached the vehicle and arrested the 26-year-old Chinese National, the holder of a learner’s permit and sole occupant of the vehicle.
He was breath-tested with negative result before being taken to Muswellbrook Police Station and charged with numerous offences, including:
§ Drive vehicle recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous;
§ Not stop vehicle when directed to do so; and
§ Exceed speed limit by more than 45km/h.
He’s been conditionally bailed to appear in Muswellbrook Local Court on 7 December 2009.
