Police shooting – Chatswood

Thursday, 05 Nov 2009 11:06am

A critical incident team has been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding an incident this morning at Chatswood where a police officer accidentally discharged his firearm striking his own leg.

Shortly before 5.30am police officers disturbed a man acting suspiciously at a shopping centre in Anderson Street.

The officers attempted to arrest the man but he fled and a foot pursuit commenced.

As one of the officers attempted to re-holster his firearm a shot was discharged striking him in the right leg.

Acting Superintendent Peter Yeomans from the North Shore Local Area Command said the injured officer was treated at the scene by paramedics and then conveyed to the Royal North Shore Hospital to undergo further treatment.

“The 31-year-old Acting Sergeant attached to North Shore Local Area Command will undergo surgery and remains in a stable condition.

“A critical incident investigation team will examine the full circumstances in relation to what appears to be an accidental discharge of the officer’s firearm,” A/Superintendent Yeomans said.

Other officers were able to detain a 25-year-old Surry Hills man at the scene and he was taken to Chatswood Police Station.

The man was subsequently charged with break enter and steal x 2 and attempt break, enter and steal.

He was refused bail and will appear at the Hornsby Local Court later today.
