Man charged after assault - Tweed Heads

A man will appear in court today after he was charged with assault following an incident at Tweed Heads earlier this week.

About 9.15pm on Monday 12 June 2017 a 69-year-old man was sitting in his car that was stationary on Minjungbal Drive at Tweed Heads South.

Police have been told that a man approached the occupant of the vehicle and asked for cigarettes.

When the occupant of the vehicle told the man he did not smoke the man assaulted him through the open car window.

The assailant then tried to open the driver’s door but the victim was able to close and lock it.

The assault continued through the open window until a passerby intervened.

After the offender fled, the injured man drove from to a nearby service station and police were alerted.

Officers from Tweed Byron Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene, also examining the man’s car.

About 3pm on Tuesday 13 June police arrested a 37-year-old man at Tweed Heads South.

He was conveyed to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear at Murwillumbah Local Court today (Wednesday 14 June 2017).
