Two under police guard after serious crash - Newcastle area

Two men remain under police guard after a serious crash in Highfields early this morning.

About 1.30am (Monday 12 June 2017), two men entered a home on Ocean View Parade, Charlestown.

Police will allege the men took a wallet and keys to a Hyundai station wagon, before fleeing in the vehicle.

A short time later, police were called to the intersection of City Road and Fernleigh Loop, Highfields, after reports a Hyundai station wagon left the road and struck a tree.

The driver, a 26-year-old man, was trapped for a short time, before being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious head injuries.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains, in a serious but stable condition.

Police located a 17-year-old male a short distance from the scene with multiple injuries. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command commenced an investigation.

The two men remain under police guard at Hospital.

It is anticipated they will be charged at a later date.
