A man has been charged after a five-hour stand-off with police at East Maitland yesterday.

About 9.30am (Saturday 1 July 2017), police were patrolling Maize Street, Tenambit, when they saw a man run from a stolen white Nissan Patrol utility parked near the cemetery.

Officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command pursued the man on foot to Card Crescent at Maitland where it is alleged he broke into a unit and refused to come out.

A significant number of police resources were called to the unit block including general duties, criminal investigation, rescue unit, specialist police and negotiators.

Following a five-hour operation, police negotiators persuaded the man to come out of the unit and he was arrested.

The 22-year-old man was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, enter enclosed land without lawful excuse (x2), destroy or damage property, break & enter house, and two outstanding warrants.

The man appeared at Maitland Bail Court today (Sunday 2 July 2017) and was bail refused to appear at Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Monday 3 July 2017).

Police will allege the white Nissan Patrol utility was stolen from a Shortland home last month.
