Man charged after thefts from elderly men – Redfern

Sunday, 08 Nov 2009 11:47am

A man will appear in court tomorrow charged after thefts and assaults on four separate elderly men in Redfern and Waterloo.

It will be alleged that between 2-7 November, a man followed four elderly men, aged between 73 and 88, to local supermarkets.

Three of the men were relying on walking frames while the other was legally blind.

Once the men had completed their shopping, they were allegedly attacked either a short distance from the supermarket or as they entered their unit complex.

Redfern Police have been investigating and yesterday afternoon arrested a 25-year-old man as he was leaving a unit complex in Pitt Street Waterloo.

The 25-year-old Redfern man was charged with robbery, steal from person (x2) and assault with intent to rob. He was refused bail to appear in Central Local Court tomorrow (Monday 9 November).

Redfern Police are continuing their inquiries and appeal for anyone who might have witnessed the robberies to contact them via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Investigators are also hoping to hear from people who have been victims of similar incidents in the Redfern and Waterloo areas recently and may not have reported the matter to police.

All information provided to CrimeStoppers will be treated in strict confidence.
