Two charged following taxi robbery - Kempsey

Police have charged a man and a woman following an alleged robbery of a taxi driver in Kempsey.

About 1.45pm on Monday (15 May 2017) a taxi driver, aged 45, has waiting a taxi rank on Belgrave Street, when she picked up a 31-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman.

The man and woman requested to be driven to Leith Street, West Kempsey.

Upon arriving, the 30-year-old man allegedly threatened the driver demanding her mobile phone and money. The taxi driver complied and the pair walked off.

Officers from Mid North Coast Local Area Command were notified and commenced an investigation.

About 3:45pm yesterday (Thursday 18 May 2017), police attended a unit block in Leith Street.

Following a struggle with police, the 31-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were arrested and taken to Kempsey Police Station.

The man was charged with demand money with menaces, hirer not pay authorised fare, three counts of assault police, resist police, and posses prohibited drug.

The woman was charged demand money with menaces, hirer not pay authorised fare, an outstanding warrant and assault occasioning grievous bodily harm for an unrelated matter.

They were both refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court today (Friday 19 May 2017).
