Man critical after assault at bus stop - Dee Why

Police are investigating a ‘one punch’ assault that’s left a man in hospital suffering a serious head injury.

The incident occurred about 3.20pm (Monday 21 March 2017) when a 31-year-old man was waiting at a bus stop on the corner of Pittwater Road and Howard Avenue, Dee Why.

A bus came to a stop and a man got off.

As he stepped onto the footpath he had a brief conversation with the 31-year-old man before punching him in the head.

The punch caused the 31-year-old to fall and hit his head on the concrete fracturing his skull.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A crime scene was established and police from Northern Beaches Local Area Command commenced an investigation.

About 6pm (Monday 20 March 2017), police attended a home on Pittwater Road, Dee Why, where they arrested a 19-year-old man.

He was taken to Manly Police Station where he assisted police with their inquiries.

He was released without charge.

Police have been told the 31-year-old man was waiting at the bus stop with a man and a woman prior to the assault. Officers believe the pair left the bus stop prior to speaking with police.
