Firearms Permits
What is a firearms permit and how is it different from a licence? To contact the Firearms Registry Permits Unit email: permits@police.nsw.gov.au. Permits are issued where a legitimate reason exists, but the reason or firearm falls outside the requirements of the licensing scheme. Here are two examples:
The Firearms Act 1996 provides for specific types of permits such as Minor's, Tranquillisers, Overseas Competitors, High Calibre Pistols, Paintball Gun, RSL Display, Museum, Theatrical Armourer etc. Additionally, a permit authorising the possession and use of firearms can also be issued in such circumstances as the Commissioner considers appropriate. How do I apply for a Firearms Permit?Check if the item you wish to possess and use is a firearm. The permits on this page are firearms permits only. If you wish to possess and use a prohibited weapon, please see the 'Prohibited Weapons Permit' page. Application forms for permits are available on this website or by phoning the Firearms Registry on 1300-362-562 (within NSW) or 02 6670-8590 (interstate residents) or emailing permits@police.nsw.gov.au. Once completed, the form and any supporting documentation must be returned to the Firearms Registry. The FACT Sheets for each of the permits will tell you what you need to send in with your application as supporting documentation. Most firearms permits use the P634 'Application for a Firearms Permit' form. There are specific application forms for a Minors Permit, High Calibre Pistol Permit and Overseas Competitors and these are available as a link on each of those permits. If there are persons, other than the permit holder, to be authorised on the permit, each of those persons must complete a P635 'Application for a Person to be Authorised on a Firearms Permit' form (except for Arms Fair Conduct and Participant Permits).
