YASC
Young Adult Seaskills Course
The Young Adult Seaskills Course (YASC) was established as a joint project by NSW Police Marine Area Command and NRMA Boat Insurance, to assist with long-term crime prevention. It is envisaged that positive results will be achieved through engaging young people in a healthy activity that may provide a lifelong recreational pursuit or a career option. A shorter term objective is to bridge the gap between young adults and NSW Police.
YASC is a two day boating program designed for young adults. The course will be run by two water police officers, utilising two 4.1 metre aluminium dinghies. The boats, motors, double trailer and safety equipment were purchased with funding from NRMA Boat Insurance specifically for this YASC program. There will be a maximum of 3 young adults in each of the two boats.
At the completion of the course the young adults will have the opportunity to sit for their boat license. The NSW Maritime Authority will oversee the licensing process.
The first course will involve a media launch at the Marine Area Command and will have participants from Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off the Street program. We will continue to work with the youth from this program in subsequent courses as well as other youth from all around NSW.
The Marine Area Command have a sponsored Chrysler Jeep four wheel drive vehicle designated for marine crime prevention activities. This will allow the YASC program to be transported and offered to young adults in any location in NSW.
The Lions Club of Australia is committed to the program and has stated that they will provide certificates for all participants.
YASC should be a great experience for both the youth and the police involved.
