Many people regard their local police as the frontline of the NSW Police Force, and so we have featured our regions individually in the 2006-07 NSW Police Force Annual Report.

Specialist Operations supports the activities of frontline police in Field Operations by providing highly specialised functions and services. Specialist Operations comprises six diverse commands encompassing Counter Terrorism & Special Tactics, Forensic Services, Operational Communications & Information, Special Services, Public Affairs and Professional Standards.

Specialist and field commands can lead investigations, or provide support and intelligence to other police teams. Some police teams are focused on high volume crime; while others (such as the Homicide Squad and the Child Protection & Sex Crimes Squad) are often involved in long, complex investigations that require a considerable investment of resources.

Under the Police Act 1990 and Regulations, the NSW Police Force’s purpose is to work together with the community to establish a safer environment by reducing crime and fear. Our core service delivery programs include detecting and investigating all crime; maintaining social order, including coordinating counter terrorist preparedness; monitoring and promoting road safety; providing judicial support; coordinating emergency and rescue operation; and working with the community.
